Parish of St. James the Apostle was founded in Medjugorje in 1892. On June 24, 1981, in parish of Medjugorje, on Hill called Podbrdo, Our Lady, Queen of Peace started appearing and ever since then, the eyes of the world are directed to this place that was unknown up to that date.
According to the testimony of the visionaries, the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace, appears every day still to the visionaries:
Our Lady invited the whole world to conversion, penance, prayer, fasting and peace. After Lourdes and Fatima, Medjugorje is the most famous Marian shrine in the whole world. More than 50 million pilgrims arrived in the last 32 years to this place. All of the pilgrims who arrive here, visit all three places of prayer and those places are:
- Chruch of St. James
- Podbrdo – Apparition Hill
- Krizevac – Cross Mountain with stations of the Way of the Cross
The evening prayer programme begins with Rosary at 6 p.m. summer time and 5 p.m. winter time, and Holy Mass follows afterwards and finishes with Rosary and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
Groups of pilgrims from various parts have Holy Masses in their own languages. Every Sunday parish prays Rosary at 4 p.m. summer time and 2 p.m. winter time and devotion of the Way of the Cross on Cross Mountain at 4 p.m. and 2 p.m. winter time.
Parish church of St. James was built from 1966 to 1969 and behind it is the White Altar.
There is a Statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary in front of the church made of white marble and the same statue was placed on Apparition Hill in 2001, for the 20th Anniversary of Our Lady’s apparitions. Even though the space around the church is quite big and can facilitate couple of thousands of pilgrims, it is too small in the summer time for all of the pilgrims who arrive to Medjugorje.
The number of pilgrims is increasing in the last few years and it is obvious that people have desire towards God, Creator and the Blessed Virgin Mary especially in this place of pilgrimages that restores faith, peace and love as well as other values needed for fulfilment of life of children of God.
